Supermarket fridges across Europe hit by second cyberattack in weeks

Refrigerators in supermarkets across seven European countries had temperatures remotely raised overnight, spoiling food worth millions of euros.

Supermarkets in Belgium, Estonia, Finland, Ireland, Luxembourg, the Netherlands and Sweden reported that refrigeration systems malfunctioned overnight on Monday, with temperatures rising as high as 50 degrees Celsius. The incident echoes a similar attack on French supermarkets three weeks earlier. Retailers including Delhaize, Carrefour, Intermarché, ICA and Coop confirmed they were affected, with dozens of stores forced to discard spoiled food. One Delhaize store in Belgium reported losses exceeding €100,000. The UK's National Cyber Security Centre said it was working with international partners and industry to understand the incident, and that it had alerted organisations with potentially exposed technology in the UK. The EU called the attacks 'a deliberate attempt to disrupt Europe's food supply chain'.
