Hackers remotely overheat supermarket fridges across Europe
Hackers have remotely raised temperatures in supermarket refrigeration systems across at least nine European countries, spoiling millions of euros of food.
Supermarkets in Belgium, Estonia, Finland, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Portugal and Sweden reported cyber-attacks on Monday that remotely raised fridge and freezer temperatures to as high as 50–55C, destroying large quantities of food. The EU condemned the incidents as a deliberate attempt to disrupt the food supply chain. The National Cyber Security Centre confirmed that a small number of UK organisations, including meat suppliers, were also affected. No group has claimed responsibility. The attacks echo a similar incident targeting French supermarkets three weeks earlier, causing millions of euros in losses. The NCSC chief executive said the attacks exploited vulnerabilities in legacy refrigeration control systems that were connected to the internet with inadequate security.
