John McNeil, 56, avoided jail after being found as a passenger in a car stopped by police on the M74 near Glasgow in April 2023 with £4,640 of cocaine and £10,050 of heroin hidden beneath the front passenger seat. A lamb named Pablo was also in the vehicle, eating chips. McNeil and driver Lindsey Sangster claimed they had rescued the lamb from a dangerous position on the road, though the animal belonged to North Lanrigg Farm and its owner had not given permission for it to be taken. Both were found guilty in September of possession of heroin and diamorphine with intent to supply. McNeil was sentenced to 300 hours of unpaid work and tagged for six months. Sangster did not appear for sentencing and a warrant was issued for her arrest.

Humaira Batool, aged 22 at the time, killed Mohammed Shaan Hussain by crashing a rented Lamborghini at speeds up to 143mph on the M62 motorway in December 2022. The pair had swapped seats so Batool could drive the high-performance car. She was convicted of causing death by dangerous driving in September and jailed for 10 years, though she initially failed to attend her sentencing hearing after being admitted to hospital, leading prosecutors to describe her absence as 'clearly a ruse'.

Derek Galliers, 78, from Martlesham, died of mesothelioma at St Elizabeth Hospice in Ipswich on 25 February, an inquest heard. He was exposed to 'clouds of asbestos' while working as an apprentice in heating, ventilation and welding for Z.D. Berry & Son in London, including at the Littlewoods department store in Marble Arch. He received no warnings of the dangers, mixing asbestos powder with water and sweeping up debris. The coroner concluded he died from an industrial disease.

York MP Luke Charters reported tap water tasting or smelling of chlorine to Yorkshire Water on 6 August but says little has improved. Kathleen Miners, an 82-year-old retired health visitor from Denbigh, has been named as the woman found dead on Rhyl beach. On 25 October, a member of the public reported an elderly woman crying and in distress near the harbour at about 10.50am. Police attended but could not find her, so an air and sea search was launched. At 11.16am, another member of the public discovered Mrs Miners' body on the beach; her car was found nearby. A pathologist gave the provisional cause of death as drowning and found no sign of natural disease. A note was found at her home. The inquest was adjourned to a date to be fixed.

Iran says negotiations with the United States to end their eight-month war are continuing through mediators, with Iranian officials claiming to have presented conditions and proposals. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi stated that if the US accepts Iran's conditions, the Strait of Hormuz will be reopened and negotiations resumed. Iran's foreign ministry spokesman said the country's seven-step proposal, now condensed, remains the basis for talks and could be implemented within two days.

Mark Dinsmore, 50, from Bushmills has been missing since around 6pm on Saturday 24 October after his grey Audi A4 was involved in a crash on Ballybogey Road in Ballymoney. Police have 'serious concerns for his welfare' and believe he sustained injuries in the collision. The Casualty Reduction Enforcement Support Team has revealed 20 locations for mobile speed cameras across Derbyshire in November, including major routes such as the A38 in Swanwick. The cameras will be positioned across city roads in Derby, Chesterfield and Ilkeston, as well as routes around the Peak District. The team says it publishes the locations to reduce deaths and serious injuries on the county's roads.

A tanker overturned on the M6 northbound slip road at Junction 16 near Crewe on Monday, 2 November, at about 3.40pm. Two people were rescued from the cab and are in the care of paramedics. Emergency services warned of significant delays in the area during evening rush hour and advised motorists to allow extra time for their journeys.

A federal magistrate judge has dismissed the entire criminal case against two former FBI officials, Nicole Floris and Bradley Benavides, who were charged with making false statements to Congress. The judge found the prosecution lacked probable cause and criticised the Department of Justice for pursuing what he called a weaponised case. He suggested the charges were rushed ahead of the midterm elections.

Nebraska candidates and ballot measure campaigns have raised more than $63 million ahead of Tuesday's election, marking some of the most expensive races in state history. General election candidates across 43 state-level offices raised $36.5 million, with 75 per cent from Nebraska and 11 per cent from Washington, D.C. Applications have been submitted for the next phase of development at Daedalus in Fareham, centring on the Swordfish Business Park. The plans include infrastructure improvements such as new roads, drainage, power and water services, and changes to the taxiway layout at Solent Airport. Fareham Borough Council says the development will create employment space, attract investment and generate skilled jobs whilst maintaining Solent Airport's role at the site. Work on the second phase of British Land's multi-billion pound Canada Water development in Rotherhithe has been paused. Michael Cartledge, 41, of Warrington, was sentenced to six years and eight months in prison at Liverpool Crown Court on 20 October after pleading guilty to seven counts of arranging child sex offences, including child rape, two counts of attempting to engage in sexual communications with a child, and one count of making indecent images of children. Cheshire Police welcomed the sentence, noting that although no children were harmed, Cartledge clearly showed intent to harm. He will be subject to a Sexual Harm Prevention Order upon release.

David Gillam, 41, was jailed for 26 weeks after being stopped driving a Ford Transit van on Ironworks Road in Barrow on 1 November whilst disqualified and over the drink-drive limit. Fish Nor Fowl, a high-end modern Italian restaurant on Penn Avenue in Pittsburgh's Garfield neighbourhood, has closed after nearly eight years in operation. The closure comes as owner Richard DeShantz, 55, faces criminal charges. In early October he was arrested and charged with strangling and assaulting his girlfriend, who obtained a restraining order. He was released on bail and a preliminary hearing is scheduled. It is unclear whether the restaurant's closure is connected to the charges.

The Pointer Inn in Alresford has temporarily closed following an independent electrical assessment that identified significant safety issues within the building's electrical system. Norwich Green councillors voted 13-5 to expel Bliss Wylie, who will now sit as an independent. Taylor's Sports Bar and Grill, located on the Otley Run pub crawl route in Leeds, has lodged an appeal after the council refused permission to change its use from a restaurant to a bar. The venue sought retrospective planning permission for the change of use, expanded food provision and a decked outside seating area. Leeds City Council planners refused the application in September, citing road safety concerns on Otley Road. The appeal claims the council incorrectly applied highways safety policy and had not demonstrated an unacceptable impact on the road.

Nearly 50 polling places in Allegheny County have relocated since the primary, according to county spokeswoman Abigail Gardner. One recent change in Pittsburgh's East End moved a polling place from the Westinghouse Park Building in Point Breeze to the Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh's Homewood branch due to a structural issue. North Yorkshire Council has approved illuminated signage for a 24-hour adult gaming centre at the former Halifax branch on Baxtergate in Whitby. David Morgan, 40, denies murdering cyclist Richard Smith, 50, who died three days after being hit by Morgan's Mercedes on Chartwell Road, Norwich in May. Morgan admits manslaughter. The court heard that Smith shouted at Morgan, who had been overtaking traffic, and after they argued at a red light, Morgan swerved into Smith, throwing him over his handlebars. CCTV showed Morgan saying afterwards that he had deliberately swerved into the cyclist after Smith hit his car's wing mirror. Prosecutors alleged Morgan had been drinking earlier that day and had his children in the car at the time.

Dan Harrison, leader of Leicestershire County Council under Reform UK, has resigned on 2 November after pressure from colleagues and opposition parties. His deputy Kevin Crook is acting leader. The resignation followed leaked audio clips in which Harrison discussed council redundancies and made controversial comments about staff, prompting all 15 Conservative councillors to call for his removal. The Conservative opposition leader said questions about his conduct "still deserve answers".

Nine men have gone on trial at Manchester Minshull Street Crown Court accused of sexual offences against a woman who was drugged and raped by her husband over more than two decades. The husband, in his 60s and from Stockport, has already pleaded guilty to multiple offences including rape and administering substances with intent. Prosecutor Louise Oakley KC told the jury that the husband initially abused his wife alone, but from 2015 began sharing imagery online with other men and from 2023 started inviting them to their home to abuse her while she lay unconscious in bed. Police found over one million photographs and videos cataloguing the abuse on the husband's phone. The nine defendants deny all charges. Four other men have already pleaded guilty to various offences.

Essex Police arrested and charged Martin Heward, 60, after he was reported brandishing what appeared to be a firearm in Grays High Street on the morning of November 2. Armed officers attended the scene after reports of erratic behaviour. The weapon was later confirmed to be a toy gun. Heward was charged with possession of an imitation firearm with intent to cause fear of violence and racially aggravated harassment, and remanded in custody to appear at Basildon Magistrates' Court on November 3.

Two men have been jailed in Darwen for sexual offences. Daniel Carr, 30, was sentenced to three years for engaging in sexual activity with an underage girl and assaulting her, despite knowing she was under 16. Zain-Ul-Abideen Hussain, 20, received more than a decade in prison for raping and abusing his former partner over a sustained period between June 2022 and December 2025, along with controlling and coercive behaviour and strangulation offences.

Two local newspapers are inviting parents of babies born in October 2026 to submit photographs for a special supplement planned for early next year. The Warrington Guardian is appealing to families in Warrington, while the Northwich Guardian is seeking submissions from Mid Cheshire residents. Submissions must include a colour close-up photograph, the baby's full name, area of residence, date of birth and weight.

Labour's Caroline Reid regained a Dudley Council seat in a by-election on 29 October with 874 votes, defeating Reform UK by two votes. The turnout was 22.45 per cent, significantly lower than the 32.86 per cent when Reform won the seat in May. Restore Britain, another right-leaning party, received 159 votes. Reform UK's national deputy leader Richard Tice blamed vote-splitting, but Dudley's only Restore Britain councillor, Andrew Southall, said Reform should ask why they could not find three votes from roughly 8,000 people who did not vote.

The Equality and Human Rights Commission has written to Reform UK asking what action the party is taking to comply with the Equality Act, following an ITV undercover documentary broadcast in October. The EHRC said it had received complaints alleging unlawful activity under equalities law, including concerns about racist and sexual remarks by councillors, candidates and members. Nigel Farage's party leader has said vetting procedures have improved.
